- WHAT DOES BRIGHT CITIES DO?
Bright Cities is an online platform that develops diagnostics and roadmaps of customized solutions for cities in 10 areas: Governance, Education, Health, Urbanism, Environment, Security, Mobility, Entrepreneurship and Technology and Innovation, using data obtained from 160 indicators. By using it, managers have at hand the necessary information to prepare strategic plans and directors, produce government plans, monitor the performance of their municipality and adopt initiatives capable of solving urban challenges.
- WHO IS BRIGHT CITIES?
We are a GovTech company launched in 2018 in Barcelona and one of the first to receive the BrazilLAB Seal. BrazilLAB certifies startups as qualified and able to work for government agencies.
Our team is made up of researchers in Smart Cities and data scientists who help managers and public administrators to make their management and governance more efficient by collecting and using data in a decision-making and by using high-impact solutions and good urban practices.
- HOW DID BRIGHT CITIES BEGIN?
Bright Cities is the result of research developed over more than five years by researchers from UNICAMP, who saw in the absence of tools to support public management the opportunity to create a technology capable of helping any city to become smarter. Its platform was officially launched in 2018, in Barcelona, during the edition of the Smart City Expo World Congress – the largest event in the world focused on cities and smart urban solutions.
- WHAT ARE DIAGNOSTICS?
The diagnostics of cities developed by Bright Cities are made available online and generated as soon as access to the platform is performed. The diagnosis is generated with data that are entered from 160 indicators in the areas of Governance, Education, Health, Urbanism, Environment, Safety, Mobility, Entrepreneurship and Technology and Innovation.
Diagnostics of more than 30 thousand cities are currently gathered on the platform, 5,000 of which are Brazilian, 500 cities in the United States and another 70 cities around the world, which makes it possible to draw comparisons and benchmark cases across the globe.
The diagnosis is the current picture of management in these areas and indicates which are the sectors that most need attention to improve performance and also those in which the city stands out. With the monitoring of these indicators, the manager is able to monitor the evolution in the provision of public services, showing how his management is efficiently complying with public policies.
- WHAT ARE SOLUTIONS ROADMAPS FOR CITIES?
Once a city has been diagnosed, the Bright Cities platform lists the urban areas that can be improved and suggests a roadmap of solutions where the most appropriate services and technologies available in the market to meet the identified demands are presented.
- WHICH METHODOLOGY IS USED?
The City Diagnosis is generated by collecting data from indicators. All indicators used by the platform are in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda and with ISO’s technical standards for sustainable and smart cities. The data, captured and updated automatically through official sources, are obtained exclusively through official sources and from public databases. For indicators that need to improve performance, the platform’s intelligence indicates specific technological solutions, which are customized by the Bright Cities team in order to meet the challenges of public management.
- WHAT IS A SMART CITY?
According to the official definition of ISO – International Organization for Standardization, a Smart City is one that “increases the pace at which it provides social, economic and environmental sustainability results and that responds to challenges such as climate change, rapid population growth and political instabilities”. and economic, fundamentally improving the way it engages society, among other positive impacts”. - WHAT IS THE SOLUTIONS MARKETPLACE?
On the Marketplace, it is possible to discover more than 1000 solutions, tools or good practices registered in our database within the 10 areas of activity: Governance, Education, Health, Urbanism, Environment, Security, Mobility, Entrepreneurship and Technology and Innovation.
Solutions and suppliers are registered through active research and validation by Bright Cities, having as criteria for registration the impact generated, the relationship with the 160 indicators and current urban challenges, as well as the implementation time and implementation costs. of the solution. Another form of registration is by the solution provider itself, which will follow the evaluation and validation process by the Bright Cities team.
- WHAT IS THE GLOBAL BENCHMARK?
The Global Benchmark is a guiding indicator of municipalities as an example of good performance in the indicators addressed in the context of the platform in the 10 areas of public management. Therefore, it is calculated as the city that had the best official record in the indicator, varying case by case depending on the style of the indicator and its orientation, for example: “Number of homicides” is oriented to the lower the value, the better the city performs in this sense, or as, for example, the indicator “percentage of the city’s population with authorized electric energy”, which is oriented the higher the value, the better for the city’s performance.
- WHO IS BRIGHT CITIES FOR?
The platform can be accessed by public administrators, civil entity organizations, technology providers and citizens interested and active in improving the quality of life in cities, in their various areas.
- WHAT IS THE COST OF SERVICES?
The platform offers the general diagnosis of cities free of charge and full access to the entire solution marketplace. It also provides relevant and current content, with trends and best practices on its “Contents and Trends” blog.
There is a specific plan for administrators so that they have access to all indicators and the possibility of validating and updating data directly on the platform. The contract is for one year with the production of complementary diagnostics and mapping of customized solutions for the challenges of the municipality. During this period, consulting is carried out so that the platform can be used as a management tool, helping management to use the available data in their projects and goals.
For solution providers, the complete plan allows identifying cities for which their solutions have the greatest contribution, expanding the prospection of qualified leads.

The platform allows the free registration of smart solution providers, ensuring that their services and technologies are offered to our public of managers and administrators. The Bright Cities platform provides the general diagnosis of cities free of charge for all citizens, just search for it by name on our homepage. After a simple registration, it is still possible to obtain the main priority actions of the municipality. Access to the intelligent solutions database is also available free of charge.
- WHICH CITIES CAN USE THE PLATFORM?
Cities of any size or nationality can adopt the Bright Cities platform to become smarter. Our partners include international metropolises, such as Riyadh, in the capital of Saudi Arabia, Brazilian capitals, such as Aracaju (SE), and smaller cities such as Vila Nova dos Martírios (MA), with 10,000 inhabitants.
